Ajwa Dates of Madinah — How to Recognise the Real Thing

Of all the hundreds of date varieties, none carries the standing of ajwa — the near-black, tender date grown in the orchards of Madinah. No date holds more meaning in the Islamic tradition, and none is more frequently imitated.

What genuine ajwa is like

True ajwa is small to medium, very dark — almost black — with fine wrinkles and a soft, dense bite. The sweetness is restrained, closer to cocoa and dried fig than to sugar. It should never be hard, glossy-wet, or candy-sweet: those are signs of other varieties, or dates that have been treated to imitate ajwa's look.

Where imitation happens

Because ajwa commands several times the price of ordinary dates, dark varieties from elsewhere are routinely sold under its name. The protections to look for:

  • "Saudi Made" certification on the box — genuine ajwa is packed and sealed at origin, and reputable producers print their certification on the pack.
  • A sealed, branded box — loose "ajwa" by the kilo from an unmarked crate deserves scepticism.
  • A supplier who names the producer. We stock boxed ajwa from Tamruk and Tahira, both established Saudi producers, both certified — and we are happy to tell you exactly which is in stock.

How ajwa is enjoyed

Traditionally an odd number at a time; to open the fast in Ramadan; alongside Arabic coffee or milk. The sealed gift boxes have made ajwa one of the most given presents for Ramadan, weddings, and returning Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.

Storage

Keep boxes cool and dry; refrigerate after opening and the dates will hold for months. Bring to room temperature before serving — the texture rewards it.

Our Ajwa Al-Madina dates come boxed and sealed from certified Saudi producers, available singly or by the case for shops and mosques. Ask us what's in stock on WhatsApp.
