Sidr honey is made by bees that feed on the blossom of the sidr tree — Ziziphus spina-christi — an ancient, thorny tree that grows across Arabia, Yemen and the Horn of Africa. The tree blooms for only a few short weeks a year, and hives are moved into the sidr valleys just for that window. The result is one of the rarest single-origin honeys in the world.
What makes it different
Genuine sidr honey is dark amber, slow-pouring and aromatic, with a depth of flavour that ordinary blossom honeys never reach — less sharp sweetness, more caramel, dried fruit and a long finish. Because the harvest is so short and the yields so small, it has always commanded a serious price, and it has been treasured across the Muslim world for centuries.
Why so much "sidr honey" isn't
Scarcity attracts imitation. A large share of the honey sold as "sidr" outside its countries of origin is blended, adulterated with syrup, or simply ordinary honey in a sidr-labelled jar. Some estimates put the majority of exported "sidr" in this category.
A few honest signals to look for:
- Who is selling it. The shorter the chain between the harvest and the jar, the fewer places a substitution can happen. Buying from the importer directly is the strongest guarantee available.
- Traceability. A genuine supplier can tell you the region and the season of the harvest in the jar.
- Texture and pour. Real sidr is dense and slow. A thin, quick-pouring "sidr" at a bargain price is telling you something.
- Price reality. Genuine sidr cannot be cheap. If the price looks like supermarket honey, so is the contents.
How it is traditionally enjoyed
A spoonful taken on its own — often first thing in the morning — is the classic way. It is also stirred into warm (never boiling) water or milk, drizzled over dates or yoghurt, and paired with black seed in the oldest combination in the tradition.
